Project
Bradford and Airedale Brief Intervention Training
Description:
In March 2008, Bradford and Airedale tPCT, on behalf of the Bradford District Safer Communities Partnership began delivering alcohol screening and brief interventions training to staff in local Tier 1 settings.
The project's intention is to train up 900 staff across the district by September 2008. In doing so the initiative will improve the screening and detection of hazardous/harmful drinking amonst the local population and will enable staff to deliver brief interventions where appropriate.
The AUDIT screening tool will be used to screen and based upon the result staff will be advised to offer an intervention from a range of options e.g. information via a leaflet, some simple advice, referral onwards.
The project is offering training to staff from a variety of settings including: youth offending teams, probation, housing, dentists, adult and children's care services, police, school and voluntary sector agencies.
At present participants attend a three hour training session delivered by independent trainers. To ensure the longevity of the project, up to 40 staff will be given 'Training for Trainers'.
This 1 or 2 day programme (depending on the experience of the trainee trainers) will allow these employees to deliver screening and brief interventions training to their colleagues in work settings.
Bradford and Airedale tPCT will be complementing this initiative with primary-care based work and is currently in the planning stages of a GP screening and brief interventions training project.
