About the Alcohol Learning Centre
The National Alcohol Improvement Programme and the Alcohol Learning Centre (ALC) were established in April 2008 by the Department of Health to help reduce Alcohol-related Hospital Admissions (A-rHAs) across the NHS. ALC provides hands-on support to 20 Early Implementer Primary Care Trusts (PCTs), NHS Trusts and other community partners.
The objectives of the programme are to:
- Provide priority support to Early Implementer PCTs who have high rates of A&E attendance due to alcohol consumption
- Support capacity and capability building in local sectors to ensure sustainability and growth for change
- Collate and disseminate evidence and learning to support PCTs in delivering against National Indicator 39 (NI39) to reduce the rate of increase in alcohol-related hospital admissions as measured by Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) data
- Produce guidance on the key enablers and activities for change
- Ensure that advice and guidance which has the most impact on A-rHAs is developed with regional input to support regional implementation.
As part of this programme the Department of Health has established the ALC Virtual Learning Centre: http://www.alcohollearningcentre.org.uk
The centre will be the repository of the good practice identified through the Screen and Intervention Programme for Sensible Drinking (SIPS), the Hub of Commissioned Alcohol Projects and Policies (HubCAPP), local implementation and the experiences of the Regional Alcohol Managers/Offices (RAOs) and the National Support Team (NST) in working with local delivery partners.
