Northants Alcohol in Primary Care Project
Description:
In April 2008 NHS Northamptonshire and Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) commissioned the Alcohol in Primary Care Project. Two experienced alcohol workers from local drug and alcohol agencies were employed to offer training and support in GP surgeries countywide to identify binge and harmful drinking patterns at an early stage and offer education, support and management to those experiencing alcohol related harm.
Training was offered to GPs and health care professionals on:
- FAST, an alcohol screening tool
- how to calculate units (provide calculator wheels) and differentiate between volume sizes
- different patterns of drinking (binge, harmful & dependent)
- a clear referral system for those identified as wanting extra help with their alcohol misuse
- leaflets to assist people to think about their drinking
