Kingston Down Your Drink (DYD)

Description:

DownYourDrink (DYD) Kingston is a pilot programme involving an appointment with an Alcohol Project Worker for an assessment and facilitated access to the DYD Kingston website. It is currently offered opportunistically through primary care referrals as well as alongside the local enhanced service (LES) for alcohol in Kingston.

AUDIT-C scores of 5 or more - or AUDIT scores of 8 or more - are eligible, however patients who are heavily dependent should still be referred to specialist services. The programme targets hazardous and harmful drinkers who are suitable for 'low intensity treatment'. GP practices screen patients either opportunistically during consultations or through new registration health-checks. The project will also offer systematic screening (mail-outs) to a small number of practices in 2010.

Once a referral is made, the alcohol project worker makes an appointment with the patient for full assessment and to facilitate access to the DYD Kingston website. The appointment takes about 30 minutes and is held in Kingston.

Once the patient is registered, they are given a brief tour of the website’s key features and offered 3 fortnightly follow-up phone-calls and a follow-up assessment (online) at 3 months. The referring GP is notified of the patient's attendance, and whether additional support may be necessary (signposted by the assessment).
