Project
Hartlepool Straight Line Project
Description:
Straight-Line project works with 10-17 year olds who have been identified as drinking on the streets. The programme aims to give health education messages to all 10-17 year olds who are drinking. When a young person is found drinking on the street, the Police and Anti Social Behaviour Unit (ASBU) will refer them into the Straight-Line programme, after speaking with them and confiscating any alcohol.
Once a young person has been referred by the Police and ASBU the Straight Line workers will send a letter out to the young person's parents to say that a home visit is required. A home visit is undertaken with all young people who are referred and takes place with both the parent and young person present.
During the home visit an alcohol assessment, using AUDIT, will be carried out with young person (with parents present). Depending upon the AUDIT score on the young person will be offered to join the Straight Line programme.
The Straight Line programme takes the young people through the health risks of drinking alcohol as well as associated risks and how to keep themselves safe. The Straight Line programme consists of a group work session and is a one off 3-hour health education session. Upon completing the programme it is expected that all these young people and their parents will have more information to enable them to take informed choices with regards to their future drinking habits.
