Hampshire Pharmacy Alcohol Brief Intervention Pilot Project

Description:

As part of the Hampshire Innovation Fund, two pilot projects took place in pharmacies in 2009. One was situated in a general pharmacy setting and the other targeted those coming in for Emergency Health Care.

Pharmacies are already situated at the heart of the community, within Hampshire there are over 230 pharmacies. Pharmacists are trained healthcare professionals with a well trained team and are used to promoting health and well being and gathering data. This project would look to support those drinking at a low and medium risk level.

In the Emergency Health Care many young girls access the existing emergency contraceptive service often as a result of excess alcohol use the previous day. The Pharmacy is a good opportunity to have a brief conversation around alcohol awareness, levels of consumption and unit knowledge. This raises awareness in under 25s and gives them directions on where to seek help if required.
