The aim of the Darlington | Street Paramedic Pilot was to place a paramedic with police officers, in and around Darlington Town Centre on Friday and Saturday nights (8pm to 2am), in order to reduce assaults, unnecessary ambulance call-outs and alcohol-related A&E attendances.

NERAF (North East Regional Alcohol Forum) is a charitable organisation that was designed to “enable positive life change and full recovery” and reduce the harm caused by alcohol misuse to individuals, families and communities by providing a unique tailored service to meet individual needs with an ‘end-to-end’ approach. They provide one to one peer mentoring as well as open access support groups and services are available at evenings and weekends. NERAF works with anyone who wants help reducing their alcohol consumption and the only provision is that the service user is over 18 years old. The service currently operates 8am-8pm, Monday - Saturday but the aim is for it to be open every day except Christmas Day.

Straight-Line project works with 10-17 year olds who have been identified as drinking on the streets. When the Police and Anti Social Behaviour Unit (ASBU) come around a young person in this situation they will refer them into the programme after speaking with them and confiscating the alcohol.

Middlesbrough Hospital based Primary Alcohol Drug Service (PADS) (UTNJ)

Patients are identified in A&E and wards of James Cook University Hospital and seen by a voluntary sector provider (The Albert Centre). Workers carry out a detailed assessment of the patient and can help in motivating them to access help, referring and advocating on their behalf. AUDIT is used for admissions across serval departments including A&E and Alcohol Emergency Unit. Referrals are made to the PADS team, and a Alcohol Liaison Nurse, specifically working with patients experiencing alcohol-related withdrawal, works alongside the team.

Since April 2007, North Tyneside PCT has facilitated the screening of over 4000 patients and the delivery of over 500 brief interventions in local GP surgeries.
Successfully engaging, training and supporting frontline staff has been critical, with the project on course to meet its long-term objectives.
