A new Whitehall strategy, the Total Place Pilot, looks at how a ‘whole area’ approach to public services can lead to better services at less cost. The Birmingham | Total Place Pilot – Repeat Attendees at A&E and Acute Units project is a focused initiative, devised in direct response to this strategy. The project is led by The Birmingham Drug and Alcohol Action Team (BDAAT), and is focused on providing a multi-agency response - including joint assessment and care-planning - to the health and social needs of adult dependant drinkers who are frequently admitted to hospital following diagnosis with an alcohol-specific condition.

A programme by Swanswell Trust to help tackle alcohol-related domestic abuse in North Warwickshire. Commissioned by Warwickshire DAAT as a pilot in September 2008. This is a six week course of brief intervention with the perpetrators of domestic abuse who have come before the courts. The programme focuses on devising manageable ways for the perpetrator to change their drinking behaviour.

Stoke-on-Trent used analysis from the Rush Model and local and nationally statistics to identify gaps in the current alcohol treatment provision. This showed treatment provision only covering 8.7% of the population against a needed target of 15%. From this an Alcohol Delivery Plan was developed to expand treatment capacity and access across all tiers. This also includes a greater focus on early identification and prevention to help reduce the long term need for increased alcohol treatment.

Hospital liaison provided by Swanswell launched as a pilot in 2003 and now part of the main commissioning programme for Coventry. The Alcohol Health Worker is situated in University Hospital and works with ward staff to identify alcohol-related admissions and liaises closely with the A&E and the Gastroenterology teams. A network of 27 link nurses within the hospital keep staff up to date and provide information about alcohol.

The Swanswell Trust/Netmum partnership was launched as a three month pilot in 2009. Netmum’s is a website set up by and run by mothers. Two Swanswell practitioners provide advice and support to people posting on the Netmum’s forums around drug and alcohol issues. Online posts by Swanswell advisers have been extensively viewed and the practitioners have provided support to a virtual caseload of 100 Netmum members.
